Finding the Right AR-15 Barrel
Your barrel is the heart of the system. We offer 16″, 18″, 19,″ 20″, and 22″ lengths in a Medium Contour so you can find the perfect balance between velocity and portability for your application.
Calibers:
6.5 Grendel
6mm ARC
.22 ARC
.450 Bushmaster
5.56 NATO / .223 Wylde
Material: 416R Stainless Steel for accuracy and durability.
Finishes: Choose between Uncoated Stainless, Black Cerakote, or a Bead Blasted Stainless finish.
Fluting: Most Lengths available in a Non-Fluted, classic profile or with Straight Flutes for weight savings.
Every barrel we sell is headspace checked prior to shipping. When you purchase a barrel and bolt combo, we custom-check them together to guarantee a tight headspace match for maximum accuracy and performance.
Why We Use SATERN® Barrels
SATERN® Barrels is a premier manufacturer of rifle barrels, especially in alternative calibers for the AR-15. As an early development leader for specialized cartridges like the 6.5 Grendel, they are an authority on maximizing the ballistics of newer, high-performance AR-platform rounds like the 6mm ARC and .22 ARC.
Here is why we have trusted them for over a decade:
- Unmatched Expertise: Steve Satern is a competitive shooter and instructor. In 2003, he found it was time to replace the barrel on one of his rifles, but at that time, his preferred manufacturer was swamped making barrels for the military. You may recall that the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan were in high gear at the time. Since Steve was a machine builder by trade, he decided to design and create the machines he needed to make his own barrel. In the decades since, Steve and Deb Satern have perfected the proprietary tooling and the manufacturing procedures they use to create truly world class rifle barrels. SATERN® has grown from a machinist in his garage to an employer of dedicated craftsmen. But Steve is still on the machines every day himself, doing what he loves – Making accurate barrels.
- 10+ Years of Direct Testing: We didn’t just start selling these barrels last week. We began working with SATERN® in the earliest days of Grendel Hunter. After building thousands of custom uppers and testing countless barrels in the field, theirs have proven themselves second to none.
When you buy a SATERN® barrel through us, you are getting a premium product backed by over a decade of our firsthand trust and over 20+ years of competition-proven accuracy.
Barrel Weight & Finishes:
Available in a classic, non-fluted profile or with straight flutes for maximum weight savings. Opting for a fluted barrel reduces the overall weight by 5 to 8 ounces, depending on the barrel length.
Uncoated Stainless: A clean, classic, polished metallic look for a standout build.
Black Cerakote: An ultra-tough, matte black ceramic layer built to withstand the harshest hunting and shooting elements.
Bead Blasted Stainless: A sleek, glare-reducing matte grey finish that give you the performance of stainless with a more subdued appearance.
NOTE: If purchasing a Cerakote barrel, Cerakote does add slightly to the diameter of the gas block journal. This can sometimes make gas block installation tricky depending on the block. To ensure a proper fit, we recommend the use of one of our gas blocks or gas block / tube combos
Choosing the Right Barrel Length
Finding the perfect barrel length comes down to balancing your mobility needs with your target velocity goals.
Velocity differences between barrel lengths can vary depending on your specific ammunition and powder burn rates. To help you make the right choice, we have done extensive testing with the 6.5 Grendel, 6mm ARC, and .22 ARC to see exactly how much velocity you gain or lose with every inch of barrel.
Here are the velocity changes we generally see, on average, as you increase barrel length between 16″ & 22″:
6.5 Grendel: Gains ~ 25 FPS per inch of barrel length.
6mm ARC: Gains ~ 30 FPS per inch of barrel length.
.22 ARC: Gains ~ 35 to 45 FPS per inch of barrel length.
Which Length Is Right for You?
- 16″ to 18″ Barrels (Maneuverability & Agility)
Optimized for lightweight builds and quick handling. This is the ideal setup for tree stands, navigating thick brush hunting, or building a compact AR-15 configuration where portability is your top priority. Our customers who use suppressors generally favor the 18” barrels to keep their rifle to a reasonable overall length. - 20″ to 22″ Barrels (Maximum Velocity & Distance)
Optimized extended long-range performance. Stepping up to these lengths of barrels squeezes every bit of ballistic efficiency out of the rifle. Our customers who prioritize the flattest possible trajectories, maximum energy and range go this direction.
- 16″ to 18″ Barrels (Maneuverability & Agility)
What is the optimal barrel length?
It depends on how you define “optimal.” In theory, if it takes 24″–26″ to get 100% of the powder to burn inside the bore (pretty typical for a Grendel or ACR caliber), then anything less is technically a compromise. But for most of us, carrying a “musket” in the field isn’t exactly optimal, either.
Ultimately, the right length comes down to your specific requirements. For example:
- If you’re running a suppressor, getting in and out of a side-by-side, or trekking long distances, the portability of an 18″ barrel is hard to beat.
- If you’re calling coyotes a couple hundred yards from the truck and shooting off a tripod, you might prioritize the higher velocity and flatter trajectory of a 22″ barrel over weight savings.
Choose the length that fits how you actually hunt, not the one that strangers on the internet tell you is “optimal.”
Why Choose a Medium Contour Barrel?
There are a lot of different barrel profiles for the AR-15 and sometimes you’ll see practically identical profiles going by different names. But we think that these medium profile barrels strike the perfect balance for most hunting and long range shooting scenarios.
You want a barrel to be thick enough to be rigid and have enough mass to not heat up too quickly. This helps keep your groups tight even when shooting more rapid strings. At the same time, you don’t want to sacrifice mobility or ease-of-carry with an HBAR or bull barrel. With these medium contour barrels, you get a well-balanced rifle that transitions quickly between targets and won’t weigh you down in the field.
