According to Hornady, the ELD-X (Extremely Low Drag – eXpanding) is a technologically advanced, match-accurate hunting bullet engineered to deliver high ballistic coefficients and consistent, controlled expansion across a wide range of hunting distances. The idea is that it’s designed for both close-range impacts and extended-range shots. The ELD-X seeks to combine aerodynamic efficiency with reliable terminal performance which makes it a popular choice among hunters seeking accuracy, penetration, and effective energy transfer in the field. 

In this post, we evaluate the Hornady ELD-X in a 6MM ARC AR-15 platform to examine real-world terminal ballistics at two practical hunting distances: 100 yards and 370 yards. Using calibrated 10% ballistic gel from Clear Ballistics, this test analyzes expansion, penetration depth, retained bullet weight, and energy transfer to see how the ELD-X performs at both short and extended ranges. 

Our Testing Methodology

We didn’t just pick distances at random. We wanted to see how the terminal ballistics shifted between a standard “woods” shot and a “stretched” long-range shot:

  • 100 Yards (2,524 FPS | 1,457 FT/LB): This represents the range at which the vast majority of hunters take their shots. We wanted to check for jacket-core separation or excessive fragmentation at higher impact velocities.

  • 370 Yards (2,088 FPS | 997 FT/LB): This is the “threshold.” Based on our ballistics calculations, this is where the bullet drops to roughly 1,000 ft-lb of energy. Since this has become the popular “yardstick” for the ethical taking of medium game, we wanted to see if the bullet actually performs when the energy starts to bleed off.

100-Yard Benchmark: High-Velocity Terminal Performance

Wound Cavity and Weight Retention Results

At 100 yards, our goal was to observe how the ELD-X projectile manages high-impact stress. The results showcased a perfect balance of expansion, penetration, and energy transferer

  • Wound Dynamics: Expansion began almost immediately, opening up around 2 inches into the gel and maintaining a large, destructive wound cavity out to roughly the 11-inch mark.
  • Expansion: The bullet we recovered measured 0.565 inches in diameter, expanding to approximately 2.33x its original size while still maintaining excellent structural integrity.
  • Weight Retention: Despite Hornady’s conservative estimate of 50–60% weight retention, our recovered bullet weighed in at 79.8 grains (77%). That’s not bad at all.

The Verdict at 100 Yards: With 19 inches of penetration, strong retained weight, and 2.33x expansion, the 103 gr Hornady ELD-X delivered outstanding terminal performance at 100 yards. The combination of a large wound cavity, controlled expansion, and deep penetration suggests this load would perform exceptionally well for medium-sized game hunting applications.

370-Yard Threshold: Testing the 1,000 ft-lb Energy Mark

Performance at the Ethical Limit for Medium Game

At 370 yards, the 6MM ARC begins entering the range where impact velocity and retained energy become much more important for reliable terminal performance. Our goal with this test was to see whether the 103gr Hornady ELD-X could still deliver dependable expansion, penetration, and energy transferer at these lower velocities and energy levels.

  • Wound Dynamics: Even at the lower impact velocity, we saw the bullet expanded very consistently, beginning to open around the 2-inch mark in the gel. The wound cavity stayed wide and effective through approximately 9.5 inches before gradually narrowing as the bullet continued penetrating.

  • Expansion: The recovered bullet still demonstrated impressive mushrooming at extended range, expanding to 0.495 inches in diameter — approximately 2.04x its original size. Even with the lower impact velocity at 370 yards, we saw the ELD-X expand reliably while retaining excellent structural integrity and deep penetration.

  • Weight Retention: The recovered bullet retained an impressive 89.6 grains of its original weight, resulting in outstanding 87% weight retention — far exceeding Hornady’s advertised 50–60% retention range for the Hornady ELD-X.

The Verdict at 370 Yards: With over 20 inches of penetration and nearly 90% weight retention, the 103gr ELD-X proves it is far more than a “close-range” projectile. The consistency we saw in expansion and the deep-driving penetration confirm that this load remains a lethal, ethical choice for medium game at significant distances.
